Reflection
The lesson started out with everyone playing freeze tag. This is a game where if you are tagged by the person that is “it” you have to freeze until someone comes and tags you to unfreeze you. From there I wanted the students to get some exercise so we went up on the track and ran around for about 5-7 minutes. From there we went back downstairs I pulled them into a group and went over the expectations for the day. After that we started to do jump roping by teaching them to just swing the rope over their heads and pull it to their feet. After we went through this we started to practice skipping while doing another freeze tag game. This time instead of running around the students had to skip every where they went. Following that activity I went up to the track and had the students skip around the track 5 times.
The lesson started out badly as right away Claire got hurt by running into another student. When Claire got hurt I had to go help her and it was hard for me to look around and make sure the other students were still doing the warm up activity like they were supposed to be doing. I don’t think that many of the students were doing what they were supposed to be because Claire got hurt and even after I dealt with the problem the students still didn’t seem to get back into the drill. I think what I need to next time is after Claire gets hurt I can pull the students in and that would have been a good time to go over safety issues or even chose new people to be “it” during the drill. I feel if I do this I can get more control over the class and not have them running around without knowing what is going on during the class. The running of the laps went smoothly a lot of the children wanted to challenge themselves to find out how many times they could go around the track without stopping. I think I did this drill pretty well; all the children participated well and enjoyed the drill. The next drill was the jump rope game which also did not go well. I took forever to pass out the materials to the students. If I had to do it again I would have half the class comes and gets the ropes from me followed by the other half. The other problem I had is that I would stand in one place a little too long and let the students come talk to me. I learned that when the students could talk to me I don’t have my attention elsewhere like I should. Instead I should just go around giving one person advice or making sure that all the students are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Also if I stay in one place all the students start to come to me when they have a question because they don’t want to just raise their hand. If I am moving around the outside of the boundaries then students can ask questions easier and I can answer them and assess better. From there we went into a skipping game where the students were playing freeze tag and skipping while doing it. This drill went well other than the students kept forgetting who was “it” because none of them know each other’s names. The biggest problem I had here was that I didn’t handle the materials well. I think this is definitely something I need to work on during my next lesson. All the students could have easily went and put there materials in a pile instead of me just leaving them on the floor. After that we went upstairs and started skipping around the track.
My peer review was helpful. I think it was a little nice about what actually happened in the lesson or maybe I am just being too harsh on myself. Either way I know that material usage is something I need to work on getting better at. I need to have a system prepared before I go into the class on how I am going to pass out the equipment so that it doesn’t take as long as it did. Overall I think it was a good learning experience even though I feel the lesson was bad in general it was a step in the direction I need as a teacher.
